Thermacell vs citronella candles
Both sit on a patio table and claim to keep mosquitoes off you. Only one of them has a mechanism that covers a group of people, and the gap between them is larger than the price difference suggests.

What each one actually does
A citronella candle is a wax candle containing citronella oil, a botanical distilled from lemongrass. The oil has a genuine, measurable repellent effect at close range in still air. The problem is delivery: the candle has to volatilize enough oil to maintain a concentration in the air around you, and a patio is not still air. The effective zone is small, and it collapses in any breeze. Independent testing of candles and torches has generally found the protection modest and highly localized, which matches most people's experience — the person sitting next to the candle does better than the person across the table.
The smoke contributes a little, because mosquitoes dislike it, and that is why a fire pit also helps. Neither effect is large.
A Thermacell is a different mechanism entirely. A battery or butane heater warms a mat or cartridge impregnated with metofluthrin, a synthetic pyrethroid registered with the EPA as a spatial repellent. The heat volatilizes the active and it rises and spreads into a zone around the unit. Thermacell states a 20-foot zone for the rechargeable E55 and 15 feet for the Patio Shield. Within that zone mosquitoes are repelled and disoriented rather than killed.
The difference in kind matters more than the difference in degree. One is a scented flame hoping to form a cloud. The other is a heated dispenser of a registered repellent designed to form one.
The comparison
| Thermacell E55 | Thermacell Patio Shield | Citronella candle | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Active | Metofluthrin (EPA-registered) | Metofluthrin (EPA-registered) | Citronella oil |
| Mechanism | Heated cartridge, vapor zone | Butane-heated mat, vapor zone | Burning wax, scented smoke |
| Stated zone | 20 ft | 15 ft | Not meaningfully stated |
| Power | Rechargeable battery | Butane cartridge | Flame |
| Time to effect | Around 15 minutes to build the zone | Around 15 minutes | Immediate but very local |
| Running cost | Refill cartridges, around 40 hrs each | Mats plus fuel | Per candle, burns down |
| Wind tolerance | Reduced in a breeze | Reduced in a breeze | Effectively nil in a breeze |
| Open flame | No | No, enclosed butane | Yes |
| Atmosphere | None | None | Genuinely nice |
Where candles still make sense
We are not going to pretend they are useless.
As atmosphere, with a side effect. If you were going to light candles anyway, citronella is a better choice than plain wax. The effect is small, but it is not zero, and it costs you nothing extra.
Very close range, no wind. A candle directly beside a chair on a still evening does measurably reduce bites for the person in that chair.
Where no flame rule applies. On a wooden deck with children or a dog, a Thermacell has a real advantage: no flame, nothing to knock over. For a household with animals, our mosquito repellent for dogs page covers why a knocked-over citronella torch is a worse hazard than most people assume.
As a supplement. Candles plus a repeller plus a fan is better than any one of them. Mosquitoes are weak fliers, and a box fan pointed across a seating area is the most underrated free intervention in this entire category.
Where Thermacell has real limits
Equally, it is not magic.
It needs about fifteen minutes. Switch it on when you go outside and you will be bitten for the first quarter-hour. Switch it on before you carry the food out.
Wind defeats it. A vapor zone is a cloud. On a breezy evening it blows away, and on an exposed deck it may never form. Position it upwind of where you sit, low, and shelter it if you can.
It protects a zone, not a person. Walk ten feet to the grill and you have left the protected area. For a moving person you want a skin repellent — see best mosquito repellents for skin.
It is a vapor product. Use it outdoors in open air as the label says, not in a closed porch or a tent, and keep it out of reach of children and pets.
Running costs add up. Cartridges and mats are consumables. Over a full season that is a real figure, and the Patio Shield is cheaper to buy but typically costs more per hour to run than the E55.
It does nothing about the population. You are protecting a seat, not solving the yard.

- Pyrethroids are toxic to bees and lethal to fish — never spray flowering plants or near a pond

The thing that actually fixes the yard
If you are reaching for either product every single evening, the honest diagnosis is that your yard is producing mosquitoes and you are treating the symptom.
Most of the mosquitoes biting you were produced within a few hundred feet of where you are sitting, in containers of standing water, because the common container-breeding species complete their cycle in about a week in water the size of a bottle cap. That means the single highest-leverage action is free: walk the yard after rain and tip out every saucer, bucket, tarp fold, toy, wheelbarrow, blocked gutter and bird bath. Then treat the water you cannot drain — a pond, a rain barrel, a ditch — with BTI, which do mosquito dunks work covers in detail.
After that, if you want a longer-lasting reduction in the adults resting in your shrubs, a yard concentrate is the next step up, with the usual trade-offs around beneficial insects and keeping pets off until dry. How to get rid of mosquitoes in your yard sets out the full sequence, and best yard mosquito repellents compares the products.
A repeller on the table is the last layer of that stack, not the first. It is the right purchase for a specific evening; it is the wrong purchase as a season-long strategy.
Related devices people compare these to
Bug zappers. A zapper is not in this conversation — it kills mostly harmless night-flying insects and very few mosquitoes. Thermacell vs bug zapper is the direct head-to-head and do bug zappers work covers the evidence.
Mosquito traps. A trap reduces the local population over weeks rather than protecting a seat tonight. Different job, different timescale — mosquito trap vs repellent is the comparison.
Tiki torches. Same mechanism as a citronella candle with more fuel and a bigger flame. Same modest result.
The short version
Thermacell for protection, citronella for atmosphere. If you want both, light the candles and run the repeller — but do not expect the candles to carry a table of four. And if you are running something every night all summer, spend one afternoon on standing water instead; that is the only intervention on this page that reduces how many mosquitoes exist rather than how many reach your chair.
