The one paragraph that matters

Mosquitoes breed in standing water, and they do not travel far from where they hatched. That means the mosquitoes biting you are, in most suburban yards, your own mosquitoes — bred in a plant saucer, a clogged gutter, a tarp fold, a bird bath, a forgotten bucket. Tip out the water and you have done more than any device you can buy. Treat the water you cannot tip out with a BTI larvicide and you have done almost all of the rest.

Everything else on this hub — traps, repellents, sprays — is about the adults that are already flying. Useful, sometimes essential, but secondary.

The honest verdict on bug zappers

Bug zappers kill a great many insects. Almost none of them are mosquitoes. Mosquitoes track carbon dioxide, warmth and body odor, not ultraviolet light, so a UV grid pulls in moths, beetles and midges — including beneficial insects — and largely leaves the thing biting you alone.

The University of Florida's entomology extension put it plainly after a field test: "Out of some 10,000 insects destroyed by one bug zapper during a one-night test period, only eight were mosquitoes." We cite it in full, with the source, on do bug zappers work.

We still maintain a bug zapper roundup, because zappers are genuinely good at the job they actually do — moths and nuisance flies around a light — and because people looking for one deserve to read the caveat from someone who will say it. What does work on adults

• A repellent zone. A Thermacell-type repeller creates a treated pocket of air and changes an evening within fifteen minutes. It needs still air, and it is the fastest-acting thing on this hub.
• A real trap. A CO2 or lure-based trap targets what mosquitoes actually follow. It works on the scale of weeks, not evenings — the comparison is laid out in bug zapper vs mosquito trap and, for specific models, bug zapper vs DynaTrap.
• Skin repellent. The CDC lists DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, PMD and 2-undecanone as registered actives. DEET and picaridin protect longest. That list is the one we work from, including on the kid-safe page.
• A yard spray, if you accept the trade-offs. Longer residual, less selective. Pet-safe yard sprays covers the version for a yard a dog lives on.

What to do, in order

1. Walk the yard after rain and tip out every container holding water. All of them.
2. Treat what you cannot tip — a pond margin, a rain barrel, a bog area — with dunks or bits. This is the highest-value purchase on this hub.
3. Clear gutters. A blocked gutter is a linear breeding pond you cannot see from the ground.
4. For the seating area you use, add a repellent zone rather than trying to treat the whole yard.
5. If pressure is severe and continuous, add a trap and give it a month.

Indoors
