The cheap thing that beats every trap here

Mosquitoes breed in standing water and do not travel far from where they hatched. In most suburban yards, the mosquitoes biting you are your own — bred in a plant saucer, a clogged gutter, a fold in a tarp, a bird bath, a forgotten bucket.

Walk the yard after rain and tip out every container holding water. Treat what you cannot tip — a rain barrel, a pond margin, a bog area — with a BTI larvicide, a bacterium that kills mosquito larvae and essentially nothing else.

That costs a few dollars and does more for the mosquito population than any trap on this page. Everything else here deals with the adults that are already flying.

That is not a reason to skip the trap. It is the reason a trap alone disappoints people: it is the second step being asked to do the first step's job.

How mosquitoes actually find you

Not by light. A female mosquito tracks, roughly in this order:

1. Carbon dioxide from your breath, detectable at a considerable distance and the primary long-range cue.
2. Body heat and water vapor at closer range.
3. Skin chemistry — lactic acid, octenol and other compounds — at very close range.

A trap that works on mosquitoes therefore has to fake one of those cues: CO2, heat, or a chemical lure like octenol. The best consumer units combine a CO2-generating surface, a warm body, and a fan that pulls the mosquito in once it commits.

What to expect, honestly

A trap does not clear a yard. It removes a share of the adult females over time, which lowers biting pressure. In a yard with a continuous breeding source nearby — a neighbor's pond, a ditch, woodland — it is fighting a supply line.

It works on the scale of weeks. You are interrupting a breeding cycle by removing females before they lay. Expect four to six weeks before the difference is convincing, which is why people who buy one in July and judge it by Friday are disappointed.

It runs continuously. A trap switched on for a barbecue does nothing. These are seasonal appliances: on in spring, off in fall.

Placement changes the result more than the model does. Put it between the breeding site and the area you use — not in the middle of the patio, where you are now competing with it for attention. Fifteen to twenty feet away, in shade, out of the wind, near the vegetation mosquitoes rest in during the day.

Traps versus the alternatives

Most yards want two of these: larvicide for the population, and a repellent zone for the evenings. A trap is the addition that makes sense where pressure is severe and continuous.

Indoors

What not to buy

A citronella candle as your main defense. It has an effect within a very small radius in still air, and it is a mood item rather than a control measure.
