The best rat traps for crawl spaces

Two constraints, both awkward

Damp. Most crawl spaces run humid, some run wet. That rules out leaving an electronic trap in there all season — standing humidity corrodes the contacts, and a corroded trap fails silently. It also degrades a bare snap trap's trigger faster than you would expect.

Access. You service this space flat on your back or on your elbows, with a flashlight, in a confined area you cannot stand up in. Every trap check costs real effort, which means two things: the traps have to work unattended for days, and you want to retrieve a catch in a container, not loose.

Both point at the same set-up: snap traps inside anchored, weatherproof boxes. You lift the box, you do not handle the rat, the trigger stays dry, and nothing else that gets under there can reach the mechanism.

Where the space is genuinely dry and ventilated, an electronic trap is the more pleasant option for exactly the reason it suits an attic — the rat dies inside the tunnel and tips out without contact.

Where to set

Rats under a floor run the same way they do everywhere: along structure, never across open ground.

• Along the foundation wall, on the inside
• Along the joists and the sill plate
• At every vent and service penetration, which is where they come in
• Near any standing water or a leaking pipe — that is why they chose this space
• Beside insulation that has been pulled down or shredded, which marks a nest

Look for rub marks on the timber and droppings concentrated in lines. Anchor every box: a rat that is caught but not immediately killed can move a loose trap somewhere you will only find later by smell.

Pre-bait, then arm everything at once

Same rule as everywhere: leave the traps out baited and unset for three to five nights so the rats stop treating the boxes as a threat, then arm them all on the same evening. Under a floor this matters more than usual, because you do not want to be crawling back in every day to check a campaign that was never going to work.

A crawl space is unventilated, the material is dry, and disturbing droppings puts particles into the air in a confined space you are lying in. The public health guidance is not a formality here:

1. Ventilate first — open every vent and the access hatch, and give it at least 30 minutes.
2. Wear gloves. Never sweep and never vacuum dry.
3. Dampen droppings and nesting material with a disinfectant or bleach solution and leave it to soak five minutes.
4. Lift with paper towel, double-bag, bin.
5. Wash thoroughly afterwards.

A large droppings load in a crawl space is not a do-it-yourself job. Fix what brought them there

Rats choose a crawl space for shelter and, very often, water. Before you call it done:

• Repair leaks and improve drainage. A damp crawl space is attractive to far more than rats.
• Re-mesh every vent with hardware cloth — damaged vent screens are the classic entry.
• Seal service penetrations with steel wool packed tight and sealed over, or mortar for anything larger. Rats need about 20 mm and will gnaw a smaller gap open.
• Clear stored material from under the floor. Boxes and timber under a house are harborage, not storage.
• Check the exterior while you are at it: gaps under siding, broken drain covers, and gaps where a deck or porch meets the wall. Rats in the yard.

Seal after the trapping, not during — closing a crawl space with rats still inside leaves them under your floor with no way out.
