Why a garage needs the boxed version

A garage sits between the two environments this site usually treats separately, and it takes the problems of both.

It is damp enough to matter. Concrete floors sweat, the door is open regularly, and an unprotected snap trap left for a week has a trigger you cannot trust. An electronic trap on a damp floor corrodes at the contacts within a season.

It is accessible. The door goes up, the dog comes in, a child comes in after a bike. A bare full-size rat trap in that room is the one setup we would call genuinely unsafe — the spring is sized to kill an animal 400 times a mouse's weight, and on a small dog's toe a fracture is a realistic outcome.

The answer to both is the same, and it is the same answer we give for outdoors: put ordinary snap traps inside a locked, anchored station.

• Sheds water, so the trigger stays reliable
• Key-locked, so the dog cannot open it
• Rat-sized entry holes, which exclude almost everything bigger
• Tunnel-shaped, which is how rats prefer to approach — so the catch rate goes up

An electronic trap is the alternative where the floor is dry and you would rather not handle the result: the plates sit deep inside a tunnel a nose cannot enter, and you tip the rat out without touching it.

Where to set them

Rats run structure. In a garage that means:

• Along the wall shared with the house — the warmest wall and the route indoors
• Behind and beneath shelving, on the back wall
• Beside stored pet food, birdseed, grass seed or chicken feed — if there are droppings anywhere, they are here
• Along the base of the garage door, inside, either side of center
• Behind stacked boxes, pallets or tires, which are harborage as much as storage
• At the point where a run enters from outside, usually a gap under the door seal or a service penetration

Look for the rub marks first: a greasy dark smear at rat-shoulder height along a wall or a stud. Set perpendicular to the wall with the trigger end toward it, in pairs, and anchor each station so it cannot be dragged.

Pre-baiting is not optional

Rats avoid new objects for days. Put the stations out with the traps inside unset, baited and refreshed daily, for three to five nights. Then arm everything on the same evening.

The stored vehicle

A rat in an engine bay is expensive. Wiring insulation on many modern vehicles is soy-based, and rats chew far more aggressively than mice.

• Leave the hood up if the garage is secure — a bright, exposed bay is a poor nest site
• No food in the vehicle at all
• Set traps around the car on the floor, in boxes, not inside the engine bay
• Check the cabin air filter housing, a favorite nest site
• Botanical repellent pouches have a narrow, defensible use in a sealed stored vehicle, and they are not a treatment for an active infestation — natural mouse repellents is clear about the difference, and the same limits apply to rats

Then close the garage up

Rats need a gap of about 20 mm and will enlarge a smaller one by gnawing:

• The garage door bottom seal. Stand inside with the door shut and the lights off and look for daylight. Replacement seals are cheap and fit in under an hour.
• The side jamb seals, which perish at the bottom first
• Every penetration through the wall into the house — steel wool packed tight and sealed over, or hardware cloth for anything larger
• Damaged air bricks and vents
• The gap where the roof meets the wall, if the garage has an open soffit
