The best gnat traps

Half the gnat traps sold do nothing for the gnat in front of you, because "gnat" covers three different insects that breed in three different places.

Quick answer
If the gnats rise off your houseplants when you water, buy a UV-plus-fan trap for the adults and yellow sticky stakes in the pots, and treat the soil with BTI granules — that combination is the only one that breaks the cycle. If they are circling the fruit bowl or the bin, a liquid lure trap is the right tool. A plug-in sticky light is the best whole-room option when you cannot tell which you have. No trap works for long until the breeding site is dealt with.

Identify the gnat first — it decides the trap

This is the step that saves money. Three insects get called gnats in American homes, and a trap aimed at the wrong one will sit there for weeks catching almost nothing.

What you haveWhere they come fromGiveawayWhat catches them
Fungus gnatsWet potting soilSmall dark flies that drift up off a plant when you water; crawl on the soil surfaceUV + fan trap, yellow sticky stakes in the pot, BTI in the soil
Fruit fliesRipe fruit, spills, bins, recyclingTan flies with red eyes hovering over the fruit bowl, land on the counterLiquid food lure trap
Drain fliesOrganic film inside a drainFuzzy, moth-like, sit still on the wall near a sink or showerNothing in a trap — clean the drain

If they drift up from the soil, they are fungus gnats. If they hover over fruit, they are fruit flies. If they sit on the bathroom wall like tiny moths, they are drain flies and no trap on this page will solve it — drain flies in the sink has the fix. Gnats vs fruit flies vs drain flies is the full identification page with photos of each.

Why it matters so much: adults live a week or two, and the females lay in the breeding site, not on your trap. A trap thins the adults you can see. It never touches the next generation sitting in the soil, the drain or the bin. Every pick below is paired with the source fix it needs.

What to look for in a gnat trap

A fan, for fungus gnats. This is the most useful single criterion on the page. Fungus gnats are weak, drifting fliers that largely ignore a light-only trap — they do not fly toward a glow the way a house fly does. A trap that pulls air will catch them; a trap that only shines will not.

Yellow, if it is sticky. Fungus gnats are strongly attracted to a specific yellow. Yellow adhesive cards set just above the soil catch the adults as they emerge and double as your monitor: a card that fills in two days tells you the soil is still producing, and a card that stays clean tells you the problem is over.

A food-based liquid lure, for kitchen gnats. Fruit flies come to fermentation, not to light. A sealed liquid lure trap placed right next to the source outperforms a light trap on a counter every time, and beats homemade vinegar in a side-by-side. Fruit fly trap bait covers the DIY options honestly.

Darkness, for anything light-based. A UV trap competes with your windows. In a bright room during the day it catches very little, which is why a plug-in light trap earns its keep overnight and in dim corners rather than on a sunny kitchen counter.

A refill cost you have checked. Glue boards and cartridges are the real price of a light trap. A unit that is cheap on day one and needs a cartridge every month is not the cheap option.

Something safe on a food surface. Traps that use a food-grade lure or a plain adhesive card have nothing to spill or spray near where you prep. Our picks avoid aerosols for exactly that reason, and the ones flagged pet-safe are the ones whose own design keeps curious animals out of the working parts.

The combination that actually clears fungus gnats

If your gnats are coming from houseplants, running one trap alone will frustrate you. The cycle needs three things hit at once, and it takes about two to three weeks.

  1. Catch the adults. A UV-plus-fan trap on the plant shelf, running overnight in a dark room, plus a yellow sticky stake in every affected pot. This stops the egg-laying you can see.
  2. Kill the larvae in the soil. BTI granules watered in are the one soil treatment with a specific mode of action against fungus gnat larvae, and the same active is harmless to pets, birds and fish. Reapply as directed while the cycle runs.
  3. Dry the top layer out. Fungus gnats need damp soil in the top inch. Let pots dry further between waterings, water from below where the plant allows it, remove any decorative moss, and top-dress with a half-inch of coarse sand or grit so emerging adults cannot get out.

Do all three and the sticky cards stop filling. Do only one and you will be buying refills in November. Fungus gnats in houseplants is the full plant-by-plant method, including what to do with a pot that is too far gone.

The kitchen version

For kitchen gnats, the trap is the easy half:

  • Put the lure trap within a foot of the source — beside the fruit bowl, next to the bin, on the counter above the recycling. Across the room it does nothing.
  • Then remove the source. Overripe fruit into the fridge or out, bin emptied and rinsed, recycling rinsed, the drip tray under the fridge checked, the bottom of the bin cupboard wiped, and any spill under an appliance cleaned up. What attracts fruit flies lists the ones people miss.
  • Give it a week. Adults you already have will keep appearing for several days after the source is gone. How to get rid of gnats is the full sequence.

What we would not buy

Ultrasonic gnat repellers. There is no mechanism here. The same evidence problem applies as with rodent devices, which we cover in do ultrasonic repellers work.

Outdoor bug zappers for a gnat problem. A zapper kills large numbers of harmless night-flying insects and does not solve an indoor gnat issue. Do bug zappers work sets out what they do and do not catch.

Aerosol space sprays. They knock down the adults in the room for an hour and do nothing to the soil or the drain that is producing them, which means you are spraying the same room again on Thursday.

Any trap sold as a complete solution for "gnats" without saying which gnat. That is the tell that nobody checked.

How long it should take

  • Kitchen gnats: a noticeable drop within 48 hours of the lure trap going in next to a source you have removed, essentially clear in a week.
  • Fungus gnats: adults drop fast, but the full cycle takes two to three weeks because eggs and larvae already in the soil have to finish. Keep the sticky cards in and watch them stop filling.
  • Drain flies: no trap timeline at all — clean the drain and they stop within days.

If something is still producing gnats after three weeks, there is a second source. Check every houseplant rather than only the obvious one, look under the sink for a slow leak feeding damp, and check the bin cupboard floor and the fridge drip tray. Gnats outside covers the case where they are coming in from a damp patch, mulch bed or compost bin by the door.

Questions

Frequently asked

What is the best gnat trap?
It depends on the gnat. For fungus gnats off houseplants, a UV-plus-fan trap paired with yellow sticky stakes in the pots is the best combination, because the fan catches weak-flying gnats that a light-only trap misses. For kitchen gnats around fruit and bins, a sealed liquid food lure trap is the right tool.
Why is my gnat trap not catching anything?
Usually because it is aimed at the wrong insect or sited in the wrong place. Light traps need a dark room to compete with windows, lure traps need to sit within a foot of the fruit or bin, and sticky stakes need to be in the pot just above the soil. Drain flies will not go to any of them.
Do sticky traps get rid of fungus gnats?
They catch the adults and are an excellent monitor, but on their own they do not end the problem, because the larvae are in the soil. Pair them with BTI granules watered into the pot and let the top inch of soil dry out between waterings, and the cycle breaks in two to three weeks.
Are gnat traps safe around pets and food?
The designs we recommend are: food-grade liquid lures in sealed traps, plain yellow adhesive cards, and enclosed light traps with the working parts out of reach. BTI, the soil treatment, is harmless to pets, birds and fish. We avoid aerosol space sprays near food surfaces entirely.
How long does it take a gnat trap to work?
Kitchen gnats drop noticeably within 48 hours once the trap is beside a source you have also removed. Fungus gnats take two to three weeks, because eggs and larvae already in the soil have to complete their cycle before the sticky cards stop filling.
